Any family that experiences a reduction in income or is currently not receiving income, even it is temporary is most likely eligible for free and reduced meals. We have continued to receive questions about furloughed employees affected from the government shutdown applying for free and reduced price school meals. Please see the guidance below that was published in this month's issue of The Dish: Updates from School Nutrition
During a temporary lay-off or federal furlough without pay, families can apply for free or reduced price school meal benefits using current income information. The shutdown represents a temporary reduction in income and families experiencing these reductions must have the opportunity to apply for benefits, if needed. Applications must include all other household income and be competed according to requirements. Once the shutdown ceases, families can request their meal benefits be terminated.
